"Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." — 1 Samuel 16:7
A heart that feels right is not necessarily free from fault. We often use good intentions as an excuse to justify ourselves, when what God desires is a heart that is willing to be corrected and renewed by His word.
1. God Looks Deeper (1 Samuel 16:6-7)
Samuel judged based on appearance: When Samuel saw Eliab, he thought he would be anointed king because his appearance met human standards.
God corrected his judgment: God does not choose based on outward appearance. Humans look at outward appearances, but God knows the human heart perfectly.
The limitations of human judgment: We should not judge someone solely based on appearance, status, or first impressions, because our judgments are often limited and erroneous.
(Supporting Verses: 1 Samuel 16:6–13, John 7:24)
2. Good Intentions Do Not Justify (Matthew 7:16–20)
Good intentions do not automatically make actions right: We may feel sincere or mean no harm, but good intentions do not erase the impact of wrong actions.
Character is revealed by its fruit: Jesus taught that a tree is known by its fruit. A person's character is revealed through consistent choices and actions, not just by what they say.
Take responsibility for your actions: We should not use the excuse "God knows my heart" to avoid responsibility, deny evidence, or justify behavior that hurts others.
(Supporting Verses: Matthew 7:16–20, James 2:17, Proverbs 21:2)
3. Allow God to Search Your Heart (Psalm 139:23–24)
Be open to the evidence: Nothing is hidden from God. We need to humbly accept correction, whether through God's Word, other people, or life circumstances.
Examine ourselves, don't judge: We are called to judge wisely, act justly, and focus on correcting our own hearts.
Need Christ's grace: The human heart is imperfect. We need Christ and the Holy Spirit to renew our character, thoughts, and actions daily.

"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." — Psalm 51:10
